Colour for the Smoke
One thing i didn't quite cover well was how to colour the smoke to a better standard. so here are some screen shots to help explain it better.
Basically the best thing to do is play around with the Incandescence settings.

The colour ramp bar is the best way to get more than one colour mixed to create the desired effect.
Once you select the required colours, you will need to play with the input bias slider. This allows you to change how much each colour is shown within the composition. in the pictures on the left you can see that i have put the slider in the positive numbers. This means that the colour will mostly consist of the colour furthest to the right of the ramp box. If in the negative numbers it will be made up of mainly the colour on the left of the ramp.
By adding extra shades or different colours completely we can really refine the colour of the smoke and create the desired effect.
This shot, is how i've left my smoke. I feel it looks realistic and looks like smoke you may see on wreckage.

Using Maya Fluid Effects
Within Maya we are able to create many different effects using fluid effects
fluid effects are found in the dynamics tab in maya.
Next we add a 3d container and emitter.
This gives us the area in which we will make our smoke, or any other fluid effect you may need.
I have prepared a video tutorial to go through the rest of the basic options.
This way I can show and explain the options at the same time.

Research for the project
As Research for the project I have been looking at photographs of real smoke. From these images I am defining the type of smoke that I will attempt to recreate using maya.
As our project features a UFO crash site, there will be shots from distance, as well as closer shots. It's important for me to be able to make the smoke fit the purpose.
The shot of the plane on fire is a fairly similar type of fire and smoke that will be needed for the ufo crash.
The larger clouds of smoke however show different levels of smoke thickness and therefore give me a better understanding of the different behaviors of smoke
Whilst at home I saw this steam billowing out, i decided to film this as it was good reference for my smoke, due to the nature in which the wind was affecting it as well as the force in which it was coming out.

Industry Exercise 2- Tutorial
For this unit i will be making a maya tutorial. The tutorial will be on fluid effects within maya. I will be creating thick smoke. This will also be used as part of the other unit I am currently working on. Where my group and I are making a short film about a UFO crashing. The smoke will be from the wreck.
